The other solution was to take a very small amount of baby powder, apply it to a cotton ball, and dust the underside of the membrane. We have had no complaints on the powder solution. I bought a Naked Case for the original iPhone based on a tech blog recommendation. Wanted to love it, but the inability of the membrane to be thoroughly "stuck down" to the phone's faceplate is a huge flaw. There's no way to chase out the bubbles, and they are a huge pain - I had to endlessly retype texts/emails because the bubbles caused errors and in one instance made my delete key stick (which, on a virtual keyboard), is really stupid. I'm moderately geeky, but to make sure I wasn't missing something I asked several ubergeek friends and an engineer to see whether they could make the case perform better. Answer: Sadly no.
